Hearts and Elevators by ~TheAfterWhys:iconTheAfterWhys:

5th Floor:
Count the number of times the elevator hesitates, pray it doesn’t change its mind about letting you in, and stumble outwards, declaring you’re never going back down. Take note of the lack of protest, smile like love, and then kiss the frazzled door attendant in relief; the one who could never forget you if he tried.

            And try not to hope.

               But feel free to love.

4th Floor
Sigh happily at the sight of the library, find a cushion, and read until you think you’re going to fall asleep. Read softly of little secrets, great adventures, and things learned too late. Do fall asleep. Afterwards, smile, and hold the book close when the door attendant wakes you; the one who’ll remember always the girl that touched every page.

               And try not to wish.

3rd Floor:
Hope desperately they haven’t decided to kick you out after all, let your fingertips stray across the woven fabric of the theatre chairs, and be enraptured by childhood movie scenes. Leave slowly, and hug the confused door attendant; the one who will remember you much longer than a fading bruise.

              And try not to smile.

2nd Floor:
Pretend you didn’t feel tortured by the elevator music, commit the rosy sheen of the tiled floor to memory, and glance reverently into glass display cases and windows, but remember always the sign saying “Do Not Touch”. Trip and spill your drink on the floor and rush to clean it up. Say I’m sorry a million times and bump heads with the irate door attendant; the one who will only remember you until the bruise fades.

               And try not to laugh.

1st Floor:
Give homage to the Visitor’s Center, say hello to the Gift Shop, and carry away mismatched trinkets to remember the pretty wallpaper and clean toilets in the bathrooms by. Finally, say goodbye to the “held in place by sheer force of will” smile of the door attendant; the one who will forget you as soon as you are gone.

               And try not to cry.

Hmmm, greatly inspired by the many people whom have been telling stories backwards lately. Not sure if I like it  Can be read backwards or forwards.

Honestly, I have no words. I adored this. Every section. And it fit so seamlessly as a whole. The last line kind of made my eyes ache in a completely saddened way that I cannot explain. No words. No words at all. Just the feeling of: thank you for writing this.

Eep. You've topped your own brilliance once again. *applauds and goes back to read it again and again*

Words are like roses, they bloom faster than they die.

Ahh, this is pretty much fantastic.
I think it's sorta adorable.

I enjoy the occasional "backwards" piece...they shed a bit of different on the monotony of normalcy. And you...with this piece...have stolen my heart from my chest and left it on the top floor. Excellent job, as always. I love it.

I've always known that I'd be trapped;
the world outside no longer shows.
And here, within this dream, I'm caught...
the Lady of the Blackened Rose.

I will pretend that was a spelling error.

Though it made me laugh.

Thank you.
